Mombasa! The dream holiday destination for my fellow youth Mandem and trust me when I say it’s a blast. I was there recently and the fun literally did not stop. It’s Adventure Time with 19-0301. Sit back, relax, and hopefully you can thank me later on.
My current semester has been a roller-coaster and a half.
Assignments week in and week out, highs and lows but mostly highs because you know we don’t dwell on the lows.
My finals were drawing closer and I needed a break just to get away from it all for a while. Hence I decided to travel to Mombasa via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

I took up residence at the famous Whitesands Hotel where I’d be staying for two nights.
I had a list of things I had to do, which included:
- Go-karting.
- Surfing or at least learning how to stay on the board without falling off every time.
- Skydiving.
- Chilling at the beach.
Go-karting is basically open wheel racing. This is the perfect thrill for all you speed lovers out there.

I decided on Go-karting not because I love speed, on the contrary I’m quite terrified of it but You Only Live Once.
I woke up and was ready to head to the Mombasa Go-kart track, which wasn’t far from my hotel.
Instead of using the usual transport that I was already familiar with (cars), I decided to board a tuktuk, which was cheaper and in abundance in this area.
I got to the track and met other thrill seekers.
The instructors gave us some simple safety instructions and let us go out to race each other.
The race lasted 10 minutes and as hard as it may be for ya’ll to believe, I wasn’t dead last but instead I came in second last. In my book that’s an achievement.

Surfing is a surface water sport in which the wave rider, who is known as the surfer, rides on the face of a moving wave, which usually carries the surfer toward the shore.
Here’s the thing, I really love water to a point I wish I lived in it. Later in the afternoon I went to the beach and signed up for some lessons which didn’t attend as planned.
I literally couldn’t manage to stay on the board for more than a second. I guess the water wanted me all to itself.

I headed back to the hotel after an awesome day, had dinner and retired to bed soon after.
I couldn’t wait for day two so that I could finally cross out skydiving from my bucket list. Morning could not have arrived any sooner.
Skydiving, the day finally arrived. I had mixed emotions about it, on one hand I was super excited but on the other hand I was terrified. I mean who isn’t terrified of jumping out of a moving plane?
I had to call up my folks and tell them what I was up to. My Dad was pretty excited but my Mum not so much. Ya’ll know how mothers can be, but they are still the best anyway.
The hotel provided me and other guests transport to the skydiving zone in Diana.
It was about a two-hour drive. We were instructed on everything we needed to do but of course we had to do the jump with an instructor since none of us had a licence.
We got into the plane and up we went to about 9,000 feet. I was almost backing out but then I remembered the amount of money I spent on this.
We jumped out of the plane and for a second time seemed to slow down and the fear instantly disappeared. The feeling was like nothing I’ve experienced before.

My last day of vacation dawned and of course I was a bit disappointed but again who wouldn’t.
Heading back home to Nairobi I boarded a flight cause God knows I didn’t have it in me to sit through six hours of the SGR again.
All in all it was an amazing experience and it sure did help me take my mind off school.
Bye y’all, wish me luck on my finals and I’ll see you next time
